Pretender to Contender fight poster for Steven Rhall at the Melbourne Pavilion on 5 December 2026

About 10 years ago I stumbled across boxing, a couple of years post 40. I got right into it, training regularly and feeling fitter than I'd ever been. Then COVID came, my girls, and the sleep went, and then the training. About a year ago I discovered early starts (4:45am!) and returned with gusto, not to become a fighter but to have more energy, a better head, and to keep up with my girls.

Training at Team Ellis, it then turned into something I didn't expect. On Saturday 5 December I'm having my first fight, at the Melbourne Pavilion, as part of Team Ellis's Pretender to Contender.

Getting here has meant a program of proper training, continued 5:30 sessions, and turning up when I didn't feel like it. It also seems to be about facing down some demons.

Win or lose, I'll have stepped in and carried it through. For me, the journey is the reason.

I'd love you in the room. Here's how to come along.

Three ways to be there
